Gopalanandji Vidya School

Evening prayer session for the boarder boys

This is the second major project BEHT has undertaken. Soon after the devastating Earthquake in Kutchh, Gujarat in January 2001, a decision was made to build a school here. With the help of GERF (Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund) a school was built for about 500 children and started in June 2002. Next to it, a boarding house for 200 boys was built with the help of Lions Club of Madras. Since then, a dairy farm and a surgery have been constructed to serve the school. Every morning, milk is provided to all the children and there is free medical care provided.

The school has children from 5 to 17 years (Standard 1 to 12), helping students to study upto the age of 17. The school is a real multi-caste school. Children come from 29 different communities. The school has now grown to about 800 boys and girls. Due to the situation and the poor economic conditions in this region, the school and boarding is provided totally free of charge.

A typical classroom scene

The school’s headmaster is a well-respected individual with a staff of 20 teachers, boarding and kitchen staff. They all live in or near the school compound and the atmosphere is of one big family. The final year students have achieved a very high pass mark in science every year. The school has been achieving very good results and is gradually building a good reputation in the Kutchh area.

Several UK charities are now helping BEHT in both the school Projects. Veerayaten UK, through Cycling for Charity events has donated a substantial amount of funds towards the education of these children.

Shishukunj International through its program of ‘Food 4 children’ has helped to provide milk for all the children. British card and gift Earthquake Appeal Fund and Lending Hands of UK have also provided funds for educating these children.

Both schools have made tremendous progress towards BEHT’s goal of providing quality education and BEHT is very confident that with the generous support from the donors, it will continue to fulfil its objective of giving Education to the less fortunate children.
